SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - A rush of vandalism has business owners angry...and poorer. Twice in the last 3-weeks their businesses have been hit. Drive-by shooters have put high velocity pellets into their windows. “Glass was piled up everywhere,” said Janese Cunningham, a manager at the Lazy Mattress Company who was called by police in the pre-dawn hours of Monday. “There goes another thousand dollars every time...It just adds up.” Carman Mancuso runs a religious gift and book store on State Street. Even with high deductibles he said, “It gets very expensive.” In fact some owners won’t even turn in a claim out of fear their insurance rates will go even higher. Cunningham’s first reaction when she saw the damage, “Thanks, there goes my Christmas bonus!” A dozen businesses around 21st South and State have been targeted. The shooters hit at night when there are few witnesses – if any. Police have swept the scenes for clues but haven’t even been able to find the pellets

There's many theories as to it's cause. But now, a New Zealand researcher claims he's put a stop to nearly all SIDS cases in his country, and he wants to help parents here do the same thing. Dr. Jim Sprott has a simple solution, that he says is 100 percent effective, and it lies in a baby's mattress. He recommends parents cover the mattress with a special wrap, and then layer it with cotton bedding. So far, there has not been a large study backing Sprott's theory. However, he claims his research, along with a British study, finds chemicals in a crib mattress can combine with a household fungus, causing a deadly nerve gas responsible for SIDS.Until a large study is conducted, the majority of the scientific community will not fully back Sprott's findings, however, many say his recommendations do not hurt a baby.Sprott says he takes no money from the bed covers he recommends, nor he says does he accept donations for his non-profit organization. For more information and to learn how to purchase the recommended covers, go to www.nomoresids.orgwww.babysake.com www.healthychild.com www.ecobaby.com www.dandelionsummers.com
